Despite the photo, mine is the hardcover from Kodansha’s 35th anniversary box set. Re-reading 20 years after my first time, I’m struck less by the plot (though it’s still propulsive, layered fun). Moreso, I’m taken by Otomo’s dynamic compositions, camera-angle flourishes, mid-page scene changes, organically fluid sound effects: his mastery of comics.
