This is a really different kind of story for me. It’s not a traditional narrative comic. Instead, it’s a lot more like a single-panel-a-day newspaper strip, except there’s not much funny here. If you’ve read a couple of Split Lip stories, you’ll know that one of my most consistent themes is the darkness that people hide inside themselves and that can’t be seen by others. Safe as Houses takes that same basic idea but transposes it from people onto buildings. Think about it the next time you drive down a seemingly quiet residential street—what’s going on behind those solid, drab facades?
