Oates wrote two horror classics: The Jeffrey Dahmer novella Zombie and The Collector of Hearts (I’ve wanted to rip off its story with a title that’s just a black square in comics for years). The Doll-Master is uneven. Its best stories—Mystery Inc., Big Momma—fizzle out rather than ending with bangs.
