These protagonists are profoundly overmatched by the challenge they face, naïve about their prospects. By the story’s end, multiple cities are destroyed, countries wiped off the map, and the BPRD are excited about a budget increase. They’re losing and don’t even see it. The accumulating doom and cognitive dissonance are so compelling.
