I love M.R. Jamesâ€™ ghost stories for how far ahead of their time they were, for their creepiness, for their foundational importance to modern horror. But Jamesâ€™ stories can sometimes also be unclear in their denouements, thus muting their impact. Thatâ€™s the case here, but even muted James is a worthy read.
